okay but. in trey's dream, leona says he feels sorry for riddle because his two underlings are both dreaming of changing who the boss is. and then idia agrees and says that people like cater and trey are scary because they smile and hide their true feelings while secretly being dissatisfied with riddle and wishing someone else was the dorm leader. and i'm guessing, as i haven't ventured into the tags yet, that while i waited to be able to watch an english translation the rest of the fandom spent the last few days taking leona and idia's words at face value and hating on trey and having discourse over this!

but my first thought? was that those two couldn't be more wrong, and that cater and trey were subconsciously being so kind to riddle. seriously. they can't imagine the trauma his mother caused him being entirely gone, that's just too far off from reality and what they know, but they can imagine it being softened a little. they can imagine him being allowed to start healing instead of spending his first year at school getting worse and worse. they can dream of a world where riddle doesn't have the stressful responsibility of being dorm leader, a responsibility that contributed to keeping him under his mother's thumb by allowing him to tyrannize the dorm and force his obsession with rules on everyone else. cater dreamt that he was dorm leader and riddle was not only a normal card soldier, but a DJ for cater's parties, and having a fun time! trey dreamt that chenya not only went to NRC with them but became the dorm leader--that the happy trio of their childhood was reunited and riddle would be known as a great student who others could always ask for help, who lets himself feel free to eat what he wants instead of continuing to follow his mother's rules. both cater and trey's perfect dream worlds took away riddle's role as dorm leader, something that for his whole first year at NRC had served to prolong his trauma, and replaced it with him remaining a normal student so heartslabyul could be a safe place where he was free from his mother's influence instead. that's just so sweet it makes me want to cry.

What are your thoughts about the king.

I think the King is a REALLY interesting character. I've always been a fan of the antagonists that are essentially "the protagonist if things were just a little different."

At first, it's easy to peg him as just the archetypal villain, the "guy who just wants to destroy everything", but as you strip things away and find that him and Siffrin aren't that different-- their main differences being how likely they are to feel guilt, basic empathy, and restraint-- he really starts to evolve into something really fun and cool thematically.

I'm very glad he can simultaneously be sympathetic and unforgivable. It's pretty rare that I see a media not lean heavily into one or the other; the King is kind of "simple" in execution in my opinion, but this is mostly only on the surface, and that's what I think makes him so cool as a character. Don't get me wrong, I still hate him, but that's the point, you know? You're not supposed to like him, even after you learn more about him and figure out his rationale.

Not to mention the narrative idea behind everything sort of circling back to the lost island. Something about an entire ISLAND haunting the narrative... the most important thing to this whole incident being something intangible, ungraspable in a way that gives it no true closure at the end of the day. It's really great, and the King ends up being a really important vessel in delivering knowledge about it to you, the player.

Sometimes, even, he does his job too well!

There's something to be said about how you, as the player, sometimes end up following the same path as the King does, yearning to know more than you are allowed.

I dunno. I just think it's very interesting how a lot of the very information-hungry players post-game wind up paralleling some of the ideas the King has. Not all of them, obviously, but. It's in there. And it's really really really cool.

Anyways yeah I like him as a character and narrative device. I have lots of thoughts about this. :)

So because of the length of the new DW seasons, Ncuti has been doctor for I believe only 5 more episodes than Christopher Eccleston. Now I love 9 he is one of my favourite Doctors I think it’s an absolute crime he didn’t get more time and the situation around that is criminal too, but I’m gonna put that aside for a second.

A Doctor who has had 2 companions, the return of multiple major Classic Who characters, references to the MASSIVE lore changes during the previous era, as well as involvement in currently two specials has FIVE more episodes than one of the shortest incarnations of the Doctor.

Now I can’t find anything concrete that Ncuti’s run is ending after this season, only comments that he hasn’t been ‘axed’ but no dispelling of the rumours of regeneration (or show cancellation lets be real), but if he is leaving??? That feels so wrong.

The length of these seasons is appalling we don’t get enough time to develop ANYONE properly, almost every episode seems to be out competing the others, and the huge classic Who things the entire fandom is talking about have taken place over what is to be THREE episodes. Obviously they’ll likely continue into possibly further seasons but now? With Ncuti? With Varada? It’s three episodes.

Eight episodes will NEVER be enough to tell stories like these. Longer seasons allow for an episode or two that feel a little out of character because we have enough to come back around with whereas eight episodes doesn’t do that - Belinda’s immediate forgiveness and affection after seeing the Doctor torture someone is the best example so far, she literally Would Not Act Like That.

I hope this isn’t the end for Ncuti, him as the Doctor is what’s keeping me watching every week because I LOVE where he’s taking it. I just wish the plot and scripts allowed for more exploration of his version of the character and his wants and wishes (lol) and Ruby and Belinda’s character arcs (if you can even call them that).

I hope I eat my words I hope he gets more time I hope characters start to feel fully fleshed out. Mostly I hope we see the end of 8 episode seasons and go back to actual creative freedom and not a streaming set up show. I hope a lot of things.
